Prof.Dr. P Mahalingam is an Eminent Professor of Tamil. He did his Higher Studies in Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai and obtained his Doctoral Degree in 1991 from the University of Madras at the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Chennai. He had served for more than 30 years in various Government Colleges in Tamil Nadu. He served in Presidency College (Autonomous), Channai alone for 20 years. He was the Head of the Post Graduate and Research Department of Tamil in Presidency College for Six years.

He had held several administrative positions in his career besides being a renowned professor and dean of languages. He was the chairman and a member of Board of studies in Tamil in various Universities and Autonomous Colleges. He had guided over 50 MPhil scholars and 25 Ph.D scholars. He had authored more than 20 books in Tamil. He had published and presented over 85 research papers in International, National and State level Conferences. He had served with distinction for 3 years as the N.S.S Co-ordinator and Cultural Co-ordinator of the University of Madras. He evinces great interest in the propagation of Tamil Literature through various channels including Television, Radio, Journals, etc. He had served in VISTAS as Director, Indian Languages and Dean i/c. of Student Affairs. Presently he is the Dean, School of Languages in Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies (VISTAS)
