The Department of Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineeringin Vels Institute of Science Technology and Advanced studies (VISTAS) was established in the year 2015 and it was accredited bythe  UGC, NAAC and AICTE. Ocean Engineering Courses such as Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Coastal & Ocean Engineering are of application oriented  scientific methodsthat are contributive to  the benefit of  mankind. The School of Ocean Engineering under VISTAS is providing very good education and the courses are designed according to the need of the industries which are related to Ocean Engineering. As such,VISTAS has the obligation and commitment to provide technical education right from BTech to Ph.D level. The School of Ocean Engineering will be providing an excellent education for the students through teaching and learning, practices and training, research and service to the community. In addition to regular curricula,  students are taught additional subjects such as  communication skills and soft skills to make them ready for the industry. The students have to undergo Internship/ Training in various ocean related industries including Shipyards, Design offices, Offshore companies, Ports and Harbors, Oil and Gas industries to get good acquaintance with  the field where they are likely to work. Apart from this, International/ National Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Special lectures by eminent people are  arranged for the benefit of the students.

The department focuses on producing Naval Architects and OffshoreEngineers who can contribute in numerous functions such asShip Design, Ship Building, Ship Repair, Retrofit, OffshoreRig design, transportation and maintenance of platforms during operation and station keeping activities of those rigs.

Members of the faculty regularly publish research articles in indexed, peer reviewed international and national journals. The syllabus is consciously designed to help students assimilate , at every stage the rapid trends and progressive growth in this exciting field. Students are admitted by selection through merit based on percentage of marks secured in the VISTAS Entrance Examination.
