The Department of Petroleum Engineering in Vels Institute of Science Technology and Advanced studies (VISTAS) was established in the year 2015 and it was accredited by the UGC, NAAC and AICTE. As such VISTAS has the obligation and commitment to provide technical education right from B.Tech to Ph.D level. The Department has been providing excellent education for the students through teaching and learning, practices and training, research and service to community. In addition to Petroleum Core subjects, students are taught professional enhancement subjects such as communication skills, soft skills etc to make them ready for the industry. Students undergo Internship/Training in various Oil and Gas Industries to get good acquaintance with the field where they are likely to work. Students are strongly encouraged to participate and compete in various National/International Conferences, Seminars, Workshop, Special Lectures offered by eminent people from Academia and Industry. The Curriculum of B.Tech Petroleum Engineering covers all the required core and allied subjects which enables our students to compete with high confidence in any national or international level examinations. The strong infrastructure paves the way to achieve academic success for higher learning.
Depending upon the qualification, skill set and experience, a Petroleum Engineer can work globally as Reservoir Engineer, Technical Support Engineer, Senior Geoscientist, Drill Bits System Field Engineer, Petroleum Technologist, Drilling Engineer, Production Engineer, Mud Engineer, Mud Logger, Completion Engineer, Flow assurance Engineer and Driller. Students are guided by faculty, industry –professionals and retired engineers on contract basis.
The department has highly qualified faculty members with rich experience in teaching and research; some of them have visited international institutions of repute for collaborative teaching and research programmes while some others have presented their research findings in international forums abroad. The faculty members attract funds from national and international agencies in the form of research grants. The faculty members regularly publish research articles in indexed, peer reviewed international and national journals. The syllabus is consciously designed to help students to assimilate , at every stage, the rapid trends and progressive growth in this exciting field. Students are admitted by selection through merit—based on percentage of marks secured in the VISTAS Entrance Examination.
