M.PHIL ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Procedure for Admission

A Common Entrance Test shall be conducted in the discipline of Arts, Science , Commerce, Management and in any other disciplines followed by an interview with regard to their research interest/ area by the concerned School /Department.

The concerned Heads of the Schools / Departments shall arrange to evaluate the entrance test papers of the individuals and the marks secured shall be tabulated along with the marks secured in the interview and the eligible candidates shall be allotted to the supervisors based on the number of vacancies available, field of specialization and the research interest of the candidate as indicated during the interview.

The National / State level reservation policies shall be followed in respect of selection of candidates for the Doctoral Programme.

1. Eligibility for Admission

Candidates who have qualified for the Master’s Degree in the subject concerned or a degree accepted as equivalent by VELS University with a minimum of [ 55% / 50%- as per UGC norms and 60% / 55% – as per AICTE norms for professional courses] marks are eligible to get admission into the M.Phil Programme.

For Part-time: Teacher candidates working in affiliated Colleges or in Departments of the University/recognized Research Institutions or in Polytechnic approved by the Department of Technical Education or in approved Higher Secondary Schools as well as High Schools under State Board or Central Board or Education Instructors of Indian Armed Force who possess the qualifications as prescribed above shall be eligible to register for the Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and undergo the prescribed course of study in this University.

The Number of seats for M.Phil. shall be decided well in advance based on the availability of Supervisors and notified in the University Website before the beginning of every academic year.

2. Course of Study

The duration of the M.Phil programme shall be a minimum period of one year for full-time and two year for part-time candidates. The dissertation should be submitted at the end of first year/second semester in the case of full-time candidates and at the end of second year/fourth semester in the case of part-time candidates.

The course of study for the M.Phil Program shall consist of three written papers under Part-I and dissertation under Part-II.

Part – I

Paper – I >> Research Methodology ( it should also include quantitative methods and computer applications and further include review of published research in the relevant field)

Paper – II >> An advanced paper in the main subject and

Paper- III >> A back-ground paper relating to the proposed Dissertation (conducted internally by the Department)

3. Evaluation and assessment methods

After completion of the course work and research methodology, the scholar shall undertake research work and produce a draft dissertation within a reasonable time.

Prior to submission of dissertation, the student shall make a pre – M.Phil presentation in the department which may open to all faculty members and research students for getting feedback and comments and they may be suitably incorporated in the draft dissertation under the advice of the supervisor. The written papers shall be valued by one internal and one external examiner.

4. Part – I Written Examinations – Papers I,II, and III

The examination for Papers I,II, and III shall be held in the month of September following year. The duration for each paper shall be 3 hours carrying 100 marks each. The question paper setters shall be appointed from the standing list of examiners submitted by the respective Chairpersons of the Boards of Studies.

Part-II – Dissertation

The supervisor concerned shall submit a panel of three names of examiners through the Head of the Department and shall be valued by one internal and one external examiner. The examiners shall be appointed from the said panel of three names for dissertation.

5. Passing Minimum

(i) A candidate shall be declared to have passed Part I of the examination if he/she secures not less than 50% of the marks in each paper, including Paper III.

(ii) A candidate shall be declared to have passed Part II of the examination if his/her dissertation is Commended/Highly Commended.

(iii)All other candidates shall be declared to have failed in the examinations.

Range of Dissertation of Marks:

Not Commended – 49% and below; Commended – 50% to 69%.
Highly Commended – 70% and above.

6. Restriction in Number of Chances:

No Candidate shall be permitted to re-appear for the written examination in any paper on more than two occasions or to re-submit a dissertation more than once. Candidates shall have to qualify for the degree passing all the written papers, dissertation within a period of three years for full-time and four years for part-time from the date of commencement of the course.

7. Conferment of Degree:

No candidate shall be eligible for conferment of the M.Phil degree unless he/she is declared to have passed both the parts of the examination as per the Regulations. It shall be certified on the provisional certificate that the M.Phil degree has been awarded in accordance with the provisions of the UGC Regulations.

8. Qualification for Persons conducting the M.Phil Course:

No teacher shall be recognized as a Supervisor unless he/she possesses a Ph.D. Degree or two year of Post-graduate teaching experience after qualifying for M.Phil.

Teachers qualified for M.Phil. Degree are eligible to guide the M.Phil. Programme irrespective of the fact whether they have taken Methodology paper for their M.Phil. examination or not.

The Supervisors shall not undertake to offer guidance for not more than five M.Phil. Scholars at any given point of time.

9. Depository with UGC:

After the successful completion of the evaluation process and announcements of the award of M.Phil. degree, a soft copy of the M.Phil. dissertation must be sent to the UGC within a period of 30 days for posting the same on the INFLIBNET.
